Meetings
We meet monthly, on the last Thursday of the month in members homes around Dundee, Tayside and Perthshire. Information regarding the date and location of meetings is sent by email. Have a look at the Book Group Calendar to keep up to date.
Each member (within reasonable travelling distance) is invited to host an evening in turn, and is responsible for the choice of book for that evening and recording comments and ratings for submission to the site. A limited number of "remote" members providing emailed comments will be welcome.
As not everyone can be expected to attend every meeting, emailed comments on the month's book would also be welcomed and can be read out on the day.
The number of people who can make it to each meeting varies so it would be very helpful for each host if those unable to attend could give advance warning to allow people to plan for supplying snacks!
Book Choice
We read a wide range of books, from a range of different genres.
At the end of each meeting, the host for the next meeting will provide a choice of two or three books (ideally which they themselves have not already read to avoid hurt feelings!), with a quick vote deciding the group’s preference.
It would be very helpful if the host presenting the choices could make a quick prior check regarding the availability of the books (with amazon.co.uk /local book shops for example).
Typical Agenda
The group is a relaxed and informal social gathering, however we follow a rough agenda:
Welcome, introductions and informal catch-up chat
Brief comments on the months book and a rating out of 10 by each "live" member in turn
Remote members views read by host
General discussion on the book
Next months host to present choices, followed by vote
It is is helpful if the host can make a note of opinions and ratings on the book for inclusion on the website.
Feedback
Following each meeting, a summary (if available) is posted on the website including examples of comments on the months book and ratings. The calendar will also be updated confirming the date of next meeting and the chosen book, this will leave only specific directions to the host's home to be emailled. Members should contact me if they have not received this info.
Special Events
At the December meeting, we'll be heading out for the evening, bringing our own favourite books to swap around the group.
IMPORTANT: Website
The site has been created as a resource to log meetings, book reviews etc., and to communicate with remote members. It is intended, for the purposes of privacy, to primarily use email as a means of passing on specific details such as directions to the host's home! Members will be identified on the site by first name only. Let me know if this doesn't suit you or you have any other concerns.
You will be emailed the meeting details a few days before the meeting. If you havent heard anything by the Tuesday before the meeting then please email me, as I would aim to have the details sent out by then, so if you havent heard then the email has probably gone astray.
